Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language which originates from a language called Shauraseni, the main language of medieval India. Nowadays Punjabi is becoming more and more prevalent in modern media and communication and has always been a fundamental part of Indian cinema.
Native Speakers
There are presently in excess of 105 million native speakers of Punjabi world-wide. It is the language that is most widely spoken in Pakistan and ranks 11th most widely spoken in India. It is also a major language in England, Wales and Canada. All in all there are 102 million native speakers, which means it is the 10th most widely spoken language in the whole world.
Punjabi Writing
In Punjabi, there are two ways to write: Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi. Gurmukhi, meaning “Guru’s mouth”. Is generally used for writing Punjabi in Punjab. Shahmukhi, meaning “from the King’s mouth”, is used for writing Punjabi in the Punjab province of Pakistan.
